Red alert! Justin Bieber quit Instagram!

The pop superstar is no stranger to a little controversy, but when it comes to using his Instagram comment section as a platform to hate on his rumoured new girlfriend, 17-year-old model Sofia Richie, Biebs is having none of it. The pair made their love “Instagram-official” just a few days ago, and it didn’t take long for his fans to start spewing nasty comments towards her. The obvious reason would be that the haters are still on Team Selena, and our theory was all but confirmed when Selena herself began to weigh in on the situation.

Selena shared her two cents with: “If you can’t handle the hate then stop posting pictures of your girlfriend lol — it should be special between you two only. Don’t be mad at your fans. They love you. They were there for you before anyone.” But let’s be real here for a second. Selena is just victim blaming, which is never a good idea. She got herself wrapped up in her ex-boyfriend’s drama for no good reason, and naturally, things just escalated.

Justin wasn’t going to let her have the last word, and chimed in with: “It’s funny to see people that used me for attention and still try to point the finger this way. Sad. All love.” And that’s where Selena brought out the big guns: “Funny how the ones that cheated multiple times, are pointing the finger at the ones that were forgiving and supportive, no wonder fans are mad. Sad. All love.” And then! According to some screenshots making the rounds, Bieber accused Gomez of hooking up with a certain former member of One Direction; “I cheated … oh I forgot about You and Zayn?”

Oooh snap.

OK, so that’s the root of the drama, though if we still had his account to look at, we’re sure it would have gotten even juicer. And to be fair, Justin did give fair warning that he wasn’t going to tolerate bullies: “I’m gonna make my Instagram private if you guys don’t stop the hate. This is getting out of hand, if you guys are really fans you wouldn’t be so mean to people that I like.” Of course, going private and deleting your account are two different ballgames.

Before he left Instagram he had an impressive 77 million followers, but what’s the benefit in that if they just inundate you with hate-filled messages all day long? Maybe this is a turning point for Justin. He certainly doesn’t owe anyone direct access to his life via endless photos, so maybe he took Selena’s advice after all. A break from social media, and time to focus on a budding relationship could be exactly what the doctor ordered. Now we just have to wait and see (and hope) that he comes back, even better than before so we can get back to being a fly on the wall of his glamorous adventures.
