Fashion inspiration can come from anywhere and that extends to naming new pieces of clothing. Inspiration can also be used to re-name articles of clothing that have been around for generations.
In December, Twitter user @kylieful posted a picture of Rihanna on stage during her Anti Tour in a collage of women wearing belts.
I want a waist choker so bad omg 😍 pic.twitter.com/9BmaoL1eFH

Jokingly captioning the image with ‘I want a waist choker so bad,’ the social media user, real name Cole Smith-Walter quickly went viral for creating a new fashion must-have accessory. You may know it as a ‘belt.’ But that’s so 2016.

The teens’ tweet quickly picked up steam, with the internet split between the hilarious renaming of a belt and outright anger that anyone would dare sully the reputation of highly regarded wardrobe staple. But mostly, people just didn’t get the joke.

I’m so full with good food. I can’t walk. I had to loosen up my belt or as some like to call it a “waist choker”

The tweet has gone viral once again, with the debate over ‘waist chokers’ trending on social media this week thanks to a tweet by user @DeeCarr_, whose dislike for ‘waist chokers’ earned over 25,000 RTs this month.

Talking to Buzzfeed about the new belt moniker, Smith-Walter says “I was making fun of stores like Urban Outfitters that try and call everything a trendy name. Nobody seemed to get the joke.” Very true, Smith-Walters. But fashion is serious business.
Whether or not you want to call the item of fabric a belt or waist choker, the truth is that Rihanna loves wearing them.

She also loves wearing bottom dresses.

And feet gloves.

And leg sleeves.

And upside down denim jackets.
