Who knew that when you were obsessively taking pictures of your food and posting them on Instagram, someone was keeping track?
Once you get past the creepy factor, it’s actually kind of cool. Who’s eating what, and where? This interactive map from PhotoWorld keeps tabs on some of the world’s most popular foods, including pizza, sushi and, of course, the ubiquitous bacon.
The number of hashtagged photos posted to Instagram from any location are added up, and the bigger the circle on the diagram, the more that particular hashtagged food is consumed there. Some results don’t quite jibe with what we’ve come to expect of the world’s eating habits. But maybe we’re just ignorant.
Here are a few:
Tokyo, Japan isn’t at #1? That seems wrong.
Canadian Honourable Mention: Vancouver is responsible for 1.3 per cent of all “#sushi” photos on Instagram, only 1.1 per cent less than Tokyo.
Move over, Italy. New York City has your numba.
Canadian Honourable Mention: Toronto features 0.7 per cent of all the “#pizza” pics on Instagram, which, sadly, is the highest percentage in the country.
The world certainly lights up when you select bacon. That makes our day.
Canadian Honourable Mention: We’re so proud of our homeland for the bacon consumption. Almost all of our major cities show up for this one. Vancouver comes in a close second with “#bacon” photos at 1.1 per cent, while Toronto squeaks to victory with 1.2 per cent.
Guys, wow. It looks like no one in the world will ever love poutine as much as we do.
Canadian Honourable Mention: ALL OF US, but Montreal nails it with an insane 17 per cent of all Instagrammed “#poutine” pictures.
Keep fighting the good fight on Instagram, Canada. Let’s spread the poutine love worldwide.
