For almost 15 years, British comedian John Oliver has been making us laugh while simultaneously making us smarter. Starting out as a stand-up comedian before landing his life-changing role as a correspondent on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart in 2006, Oliver went on to host John Oliver’s New York Stand-Up Show, appear in a reoccurring role on Community, and eventually land his own weekly news show Last Week Tonight with John Oliver in 2014.
Currently in its sixth season and airing Sunday nights on Crave, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver is yet another reminder that smart is sexy and Oliver is hella smart.
And now, this.
HE’S A FEMINIST
John Oliver has frequently used his platform to shine light on feminist issues, from the wage gap, to paid family leave, to abortion laws. Not only that, but on Oliver’s many trips to the podium to accept Emmys for Last Week Tonight, he’s usually joined by Executive Producer Liz Stanton and his writing team, which features more female writers than his competitors. It’s true. Women can work in late night TV. It’s not illegal!
HE SUPPORTS OTHER COMEDIANS
In 2010, Oliver hosted the Comedy Central series John Oliver’s New York Stand-Up Show where each week he invited a trio of up and coming comedians onto his stage for the chance to perform their set on TV. Running for four seasons, the show featured several big-name comedians, including Hannibal Buress, Amy Schumer, Pete Holmes, Kumail Nanjiani, Jen Kirkman and more. All four seasons of John Oliver’s New York Stand-Up Show are available now on Crave.
HE MAKES US SMARTER
On Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, the British comedian and his team of writers routinely break down topics that are difficult to understand, like the Iran deal and Brexit, giving us the tools we need to feel like we have a grasp on the subject and the desire to do more research.
HE GIVES GOOD WATER COOLER
Not only does Last Week Tonight with John Oliver tackle complicated subjects, it also takes a deep dive into topics we know about, but maybe haven’t seen from a different angle. This season alone, Oliver and co. have looked into the ongoing dark history of mobile homes and tactics used by professional psychics, giving us episodes we can’t wait to discuss on Monday morning at the office. Or as we call it, Tomorrow Morning about Last Night.
HE’S NOT AFRAID OF MAKING ENEMIES
This season alone, John Oliver has taken on the WWE’s Vince McMahon and former Tonight Show host Jay Leno. While most TV hosts try to play nice with their peers, Oliver is not afraid to make waves. You can be rich and powerful and a bigwig in media, but if you do something crappy, Oliver is coming for you.
HE CAN MAKE POLITICS FUNNY
From his stand-up specials, like John Oliver: Terrifying Times (watch now on Crave), to his five seasons on The Daily Show With John Stewart, to Last Week Tonight, the British comedian has been informing viewers on politics while making the dry subject matter interesting and understandable. And funny. Don’t forget funny.
HE’S AN AUTHOR
In 2018, Oliver enlisted the help of his staff, as well as author Jill Twiss and illustrator EG Keller, to write a children’s book called A Day In The Life of Marlon Bundo. The book was written in response to Vice President and notoriously anti-LGBTQ politician Mike Pence and his children’s book Marlon Bundo’s A Day In The Life of the Vice President. Not only was the book a great way to stick it to the VP, it’s also a beautiful story, with Oliver’s Marlon Bundo quickly becoming a bestseller. If you invite us to your baby shower, you’re getting this book.
HE IS OUT TO MAKE DONALD DRUMPF AGAIN
While some late-night hosts took their sweet time to get on board with criticizing President Trump, John Oliver has been taking POTUS to task since before his presidency. He’s tired of talking about him, we’re tired of hearing about him, but the fight to end Donald Trump’s presidency continues and Oliver is doing his part to keep the masses informed.
HE’S AN HONO’U’RARY CANADIAN
If you have a TV show and invite Mike Myers dressed as a Mountie while driving a makeshift Zamboni, we will make you an honourary Canadian. This is especially good news for John considering the above point. We’ll keep your seat at the rink warm, John.

HE’S A HOCKEY FAN
Seriously, so close to being Canadian.
HE’S FRIENDS WITH BEYONCE
Well, he’s in a movie with Beyoncé, so that’s good enough for us.

WE’RE SERIOUS WITH THE FEMINIST STUFF
We know we said it before, but between Oliver’s interview on public shaming (and his apology) with Monica Lewinsky, to speaking with Anita Hill, to criticizing the Miss America Pageant, Oliver continues to be another straight white man on TV, but one that we’re happy has a mic.
SHORT SAPPY THREAD: ♥️ overwhelmed by + grateful for the lovely comments + reactions to @iamjohnoliver ‘s piece on public shaming on @LastWeekTonight. john’s regret over his past jokes about me (mild in comparison to many others), has had an inspirational knock-on effect.
