If you’ve started to think that Halifax might be haunted, you’re not alone.

An extremely creepy sound has been winding through the city lately, raising the hairs of residents everywhere. People on social media have been trying to figure out where it’s coming from, with some even comparing it to a banshee–a wailing female spirit that warns of death. And if you think we’re kidding about how eerie it is, have a listen for yourself:

Yeah, have a great sleep tonight.

Fortunately, there probably isn’t a banshee haunting the streets of Halifax. The noise is more prominent when the winds are blowing hard, and the sound has been traced back to a convention centre that is still under construction.

“It’s very similar to a musical instrument,” local meteorologist Richard Zurawski told CTV News. “Think of it almost as wind chimes in a way. They’re not banging against each other but they are setting up standing waves. It’s these standing waves that we’re hearing and they can be very eerie because what we’re hearing are different harmonics.”

Zurawski says once the convention centre is complete, the noise should stop.

Sweet dreams, Halifax.
