Musical theatre may not be your cup of tea, and perhaps the closest you’ve come to seeing a Broadway show was watching James Corden in an SUV with four vocally gifted stars, belting it out like nobody’s business. And that’s fine. A lot of us have spent a lifetime believing Broadway shows are all about stuffy song-and-dance numbers, but Hamilton is here to change all that.
Hamilton, which tells the life story of founding father and U.S. treasury secretary Alexander Hamilton, might not sound like exciting stuff. When you hear the words “founding father,” you automatically expect a boring lesson from your high school history teacher. But thanks to creator, composer, writer and star Lin-Manuel Miranda, the story, told predominantly through rap and hip-hop music, has become Broadway’s biggest hit, with everyone trying — and sadly, failing — to get tickets.
Chances are, unless you’re an A-list celebrity, you won’t be seeing it anytime soon. Thanks to Facebook and CBS, however, you can catch some cast members rehearsing a number for this weekend’s Tonys. And it’s not just any video; it’s a 360-degree video, so you can watch it in all its glory. You’re right in the middle of everything! It’s almost as if the producers know not everyone can attend a showing, so they’ve found exciting and wonderful ways for average people (that’s us) to still enjoy it.
You can also catch the Hamilton cast during the actual Tony Awards, as they perform and likely sweep the night. Either way, it’s a win-win.
The 70th Annual Tony Awards air Sunday, June 12 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CTV.
