The prom is one of the biggest teenage rites of passage, and kids across North America have huge expectations the night-of. While lots of teens fret about sex, drinking, drugs and looking good, others worry about something far more all-encompassing — gender, and how they’re going to represent themselves in front of all their peers.

The unspoken rules of prom are simple: you’re a guy, you wear a tux. You’re a girl, you wear a fancy dress. Anyone who bucks that trend instantly stands out; some kids are even told not to bother showing up. Doesn’t sound like a very fun, carefree prom, does it?

MTV News asked 12 young adults with diverse gender identities what they would wear to a de-gendered prom, so that everyone could feel included. The results are as varied and colourful as the LGBT rainbow.
