JLo and A-Rod might buy the New York Mets

Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez may be about to take ‘rooting for your team’ to an entirely new level. The couple are reportedly in talks to buy the New York Mets baseball club. The team, currently owned by an American real estate tycoon, has been on the market since December of 2019 but a previous buyer backed out of an earlier deal. Cue: the ultimate New York power couple swooping in to make a bid.Backed by one of the big banks, J-Lo and her fiance are reportedly ready to put in an offer on the Mets — the current owner is looking to part with 80% of his stake. Variety writes that the value of that share is around $2.6 billion USD (or at least that’s what the previous asking price was back when the December deal was still in the works). However, the former shortstop, third baseman, and frequent home-run hitter was nearly a Met mid-career. A-Rod was a free agent back in 2000 and the New York team — his favourite when he was growing up in Manhattan — was courting him. Instead, he took a very lucrative spot with the Texas Rangers. Rodriguez returned to NYC in 2004 and has talked about his interest in owning the Mets as recently as this past March.

Lopez and Rodriguez are two of the celebrities that New York governor Andrew Cuomo has enlisted to help encourage people to stay home during the COVID-19 outbreak. Earlier this month they posted a PSA to Lopez’s Instagram account voicing their support for the state’s healthcare workers. Just this past weekend, Rodriguez posted a photo of the couple’s converted backyard, lit up as a stage for Lopez’s One World: Together At Home contribution.
