Here’s a story that will likely not shock women. At the ripe age of 40, superstar Cher was told by two men in Hollywood that she was no longer sexy. While performing in Atlantic City on Friday, Cher regaled concert goers with the story of the time director George Miller informed her that he and Jack Nicholson thought she was too old and unattractive to play the sexy lead in Witches of Eastwick.

Cool.

Speaking to the sold-out crowd at her show at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, the 72-year-old, still-sexy singer and actor said she had just celebrated her 40th birthday in 1986 and was feeling good about herself when she got a call from Miller, who was casting his film Witches of Eastwick.

“He said, ‘I just wanted to call and tell you that I don’t want you in my movie and Jack Nicholson and I think you’re too old and you’re not sexy,’” said Cher. “Good morning, 40!”

For some reason, Miller felt the need to expand on the insults, continuing to lambaste Cher for existing and pushing her to tears. “He just wanted to tell me everything: ‘I hate the way you walk. I hate the way you talk. I don’t like the colour of your hair. I don’t like your eyes,’” said Cher.

Thankfully, Cher abruptly put an end to the insults. “I was like, ‘O.K., look motherf*cker . . . you didn’t find me under a rock. I was nominated for an Academy Award for Silkwood. And I got the Cannes Film Festival award for best actress for Mask, so goodbye!’”

That attitude helped eventually get Cher cast in Miller’s film, and before you start the ‘I Hate Jack Nicholson’ anti-fan club, that relationship also worked out. In a 2013 interview with CBS, Cher revealed that she and Nicholson quickly became friends, with the pair remaining close long after filming wrapped on the 1987 movie. “I loved him,” said Cher about Nicholson. “And we’re still friends.”

So, maybe Miller and Nicholson were trying some kind of reverse psychology method on Cher to see whether she had the attitude and bravado for the role. Right? Maybe? Or, the world is a really sexist place. We’ll go with that one.
