For the past few episodes of Grey’s Anatomy, the tension between April and Jackson has been mounting. There were many obvious reasons for the former couple, current roommates to have issues. The suspension of Richard Webber and April’s decision to accept Catherine’s offer to be the Interim Chief in Meredith’s absence are two big cataclysms between the couple. Plus, living with your ex isn’t ideal.

But this week we saw that a big issue with Jackson has been his anger over his absentee father and for once, Catherine’s meddling worked out favourablely for Japril fans.

This week’s episode was all about Jackson, with the eldest Avery surgeon even scoring the opening and closing voiceover. April and Jackson traveled to Montana together at Catherine’s urging to help a young patient who needed a critical surgery, giving the Grey’s editors a chance to use b-roll of snowy mountains instead of the usual raining Seattle landscape.

The storyline of scared parents dealing with dying and sick children was typical Grey’s tissue-grabbing fare, but a surprising twist in Jackson’s life threw in a new, interesting element to this week’s episode. Jackson has a dad! Well, I guess he’s always had a dad, but this week we got to see him!

Jackson’s desire to go to Montana was to meet his absentee father played by Eric Roberts, the man who gave Catherine the Avery name and a super hot son before bailing on them both. The guy couldn’t handle a life with a private jet. We’d say we get it, but we don’t.

Robert was a huge disappointment in the dad department, but their reconciliation did bring closure to one part of Jackson’s life, and that was ending his separation from April. We’ve been waiting for the return of Japril and tonight, the Grey’s gods delivered. All hail Catherine Avery and her meddling.

Will the two stay together and finally be happy or continue to let their past mistakes keep them apart? We still have about seven episodes to go this season, so I’d say the latter.

Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on CTV.
