If you grew up during the 1990’s, there’s a good chance Alanis Morissette’s groundbreaking album Jagged Little Pill has a huge place in your heart. Written by a then 20-year-old Alanis, the album represents an artist who was transitioning from teenager to adult, pop star to indie artist, happily in love to heartbroken (damn you, Uncle Joey). Released in 1995, Morissette’s collection of emotional and visceral songs became the soundtrack for a generation.
Jagged Little Pill went on to become the second best-selling album of the 1990’s and took home five Grammy Awards, with Morissette becoming the youngest artist to ever win Album of the Year, a record that wasn’t broken until 2010 by Taylor Swift. The fact that the biggest musician in the world was Canadian also wasn’t lost on us. We lived for Alanis.
Much to the delight of fans, Morissette has often celebrated her beloved album, embarking on an acoustic tour of Jagged Little Pill for the album’s 10 year anniversary and releasing a special edition of the disc in 2015 for the record’s 20th anniversary. What more could fans ask for? It turns out, more. Jagged Little Pill is turning into a musical. Yas kween.
What started as a rumour in 2013 has now been confirmed by Morissette, with writer Diablo Cody signed on to create the story. The musical will focus on “a modern and multi-generational family and their complex dynamics, touching on issues of gender identity and race,” with Cody’s involvement a perfect partnership for Morissette. The author and screenwriter is best known for her 2007 film Juno, starring Ellen Page and Michael Cera, which boasts an incredible soundtrack and a one of the most realistic coming of age stories ever shown on the big screen.
Tony Award-winning director Diane Paulus will direct the musical, which will feature songs both from Jagged Little Pill and Morissette’s other albums, with musical arrangement by Tom Kitt, who worked on Green Day’s American Idiot musical.
“This team that has come together for this Jagged Little Pill musical is my musical theater dream come true,”says Morissette. “The chemistry between all of us is crackling and I feel honored to be diving into these songs again, surrounded by all of this searing talent. Diablo and Diane are already taking these deeply personal songs that are part of my soul’s marrow to a whole other level of hope, freedom and complexity.”
“Ironic,” “You Oughta Know” and “Hand in My Pocket” are confirmed for the upcoming musical, with “Perfect” and “Mary Jane” seeming like obvious choices for a musical about identity issues. As for non-Jagged Little Pill tracks, “Precious Illusions” would definitely fit the subject matter, with “Everything” and “Thank U” seeming like obvious choices for closing numbers. Honestly, we’ll sit through a six hour musical just to hear all of Morissette’s songs.
Jagged Little Pill the musical will premiere May 2018 at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts. We’ve got one hand in our pocket and the other one booking a flight to Massachusetts.
