Federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh, 38, proposed to his girlfriend, clothing designer Gurkiran Kaur, 27, in front of friends and family Tuesday night in Toronto. Singh had also invited select media to attend (obviously for the photo op) under the premise that the event was a roka (a pre-wedding Punjabi ceremony). In front of the small crowd, Singh dropped to a knee and popped the question. Obviously, she said yes.

National Post reports that the event was held at the vegetarian restaurant where the couple had their first date. For months, Singh has been dodging relationship questions and apart from denying reports in December that he and Kaur were already engaged (way to jump the gun, guys), he has been incredibly private about his personal life. He told reporters Tuesday that he was keen to keep a “healthy balance” between his public and private lives, despite the public nature of his engagement.

“I’m super excited to take this step forward — to have a life and future together with my partner,” the leader told media. He also allowed Canadian Press photographer Frank Gunn to capture some beauty shots of the couple. Anyone else getting royal engagement vibes?

The cuteness is pretty overwhelming, if you ask us. After the proposal, Kaur reportedly made her way into the crowd showing off the ring and announcing “Everyone, I’m engaged!” excitedly.

Canadians, including Justin Trudeau, have offered their congratulations and well wishes to the couple.

Some people didn’t allow the cute proposal to distract from the truly important news here. Where did Gurkiran get that jumpsuit and shoes? She looks stunning and we need details. Can we have a followup post please? Your public is waiting.
