What happens when an interviewer interviews an interviewer? You open a portal into the late night TV interviewer inception! That’s pretty much what happened Monday night when late-night TV talk show host James Corden (The Late Late Show, weekdays on CTV at 12:37ET) was interviewed by late-night TV talk show host Jimmy Kimmel (Jimmy Kimmel Live!) and it nearly blew a hole through the late night space-time continuum. Who is interviewing who? Nobody knows but you’ll fall willingly down that rabbit hole with these two funny dudes.
On this episode of James and Jimmy Tonight! (just roll with it), our delightful British boy served all the behind-the-scenes goss on that infamous recent installment of Carpool Karaoke that saw him take Kanye West on a singing airplane ride.
“I’m very curious to know how that came to pass,” Jimmy admitted.
“Why are you curious Jimmy?” the Late Late Show host asked with a knowing grin on his face.
“Because I’ve been in the mix with Kanye,” he giggled before saying very diplomatically, “and I know that things go according to Kanye’s plan.”
If you remember, Jimmy has had several run-ins on his show with Kanye where the rapper tends to go off on these long tangential stories that aren’t even remotely related to the question he was asked. Most recently, when he appeared on Jimmy’s show to talk about his new album Jesus Is King, he instead started talking about the Medici family and then insulted an older gentleman in the audience who had just won the lottery. So naturally Jimmy would be eager to compare ‘Ye notes with James.
It turns out, that the Carpool Karaoke episode almost didn’t happen. In fact, it almost didn’t happen three times. As James tells it, they had tried to get Kanye to do the bit on three separate occasions, and each time, ‘Ye cancelled last minute; one time when James was driving up Kanye’s driveway to pick him up! But it was Kanye who suggested that they shoot the bit on an airplane with his entire choir.

“Great yeah,” James reacted suspiciously, “Let’s do it on a f***ing spaceship. . . . Even as I walked onto the plane, I thought at some point someone was gonna go, ‘Yeah it’s not gonna happen.’” But Kanye made it happen, and as James tells it, the shoot went smoothly. “He was in a great place, and in the best mood.” Are we talking about the same Kanye, James? No shade!
Jimmy and James also chatted about James’ turn in the upcoming Cats live-action movie, which also stars Taylor Swift who loves how “weird” it is, and about the reunion of Gavin & Stacey, the show that made him famous back in the U.K., and it’s always nice to see rival late-night TV talk show hosts have a fun chat and support each other with nothing but love.
