If you thought Cats was going to be left out of the Oscars this year, you were wrong. The notorious flop may not have been nominated for any Academy Awards but its stars James Corden and Rebel Wilson still managed to steal the awards show by presenting onstage in full feline garb. Their hilarious outfits were complemented by poorly-done, slapped-on costume makeup that was more reminiscent of Halloween than a feature film. It was strange, it was unexpected and it was completely delightful.“As cast members of the motion picture Cats, nobody more than us understands the importance of good visual effects,” Corden stated as the audience roared in laughter. Wilson fluffed her cat ears and dramatically swung her tail, grimacing as she spoke while Corden, in full character, remained poised and aloof. Margot Robbie was seen bursting into laughter from the audience while Rita Wilson cracked up next to husband Tom Hanks.[video_embed id='-1']RELATED: Brad Pitt wins the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor[/video_embed]In case you missed it: Cats was, by most accounts, a hot mess. The film was panned by critics and audiences across the globe, garnering heaps of both scorn and genuine confusion on social media. The visual effects were so problematic, they had to be corrected and re-released shortly after it premiered. Faces weren’t in the right places and the cat bodies were perplexing, to say the least. Not even Taylor Swift could save Cats from being torn apart on Twitter.Pausing before announcing the award’s winner, Corden and Wilson stopped to energetically bat at the microphone stand for a prolonged period of time, like a cat, get it? (The award eventually went to war drama 1917, for the record.) Bradley Cooper was shown watching on with an expression of pure joy, reminding us that there’s a little bit of good in everything (even the 2019 film adaptation of Cats). And the stars of the film? Well, somehow, it looks like they had the last laugh.[video_embed id='-1']RELATED: Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus definitely know what cinematographers do[/video_embed]
