According to James Corden, his floral allergy nearly disrupted a pivotal moment in Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s wedding ceremony.

“Well, I’ve gotta tell you, I’ve had quite the weekend,” the host said during The Late Late Show Monday, earning cheers from the audience. Corden was one of 600 guests to attend the ceremony at St. George’s Chapel on Saturday.  “It was one of the most beautiful ceremonies I’ve ever been to,” he said, expressing what an honour it was to be invited to the affair. However, Corden admits the elaborate floral arrangements had him sniffling throughout.

“Here’s the thing. The worst part of the ceremony for me was there were flowers everywhere. The most beautiful flowers you’ve ever seen,” he added. “And I get quite bad allergies if I’m in such close proximity to flowers. So for a lot of the ceremony, I just needed to sneeze,” he revealed. “But, right at the point when the archbishop was saying ‘if anyone knows of any reason [these two should not be married]...’” he trails off, the audience laughing. “I was like ‘please don’t sneeze, please don’t sneeze,’” Cordon says, re-enacting the awkward struggle of trying to hold in a sneeze.

Lucky for him, he was able to supress the impulse. “I had to do one of those internal sneezes. I think I got away with it,” he said with a laugh.

This could also be the reason behind Corden’s grim expression during the ceremony.

“In my defense, what face do you make whilst you’re watching a cellist in a church?” he asked while showing the photo of his scowl.

Regardless of his pesky allergies, Corden asserts how thrilled he was to attend to wedding. “It was the most wonderful and inclusive service” he said, calling the affair “joyous” and “uplifting.”

“It was a modern, forward-thinking couple having the exact ceremony that they wanted, and they brought Britain and the world together,” he concluded with a smile.
