In the wake of Jamie Foxx being photographed in close proximity to a mystery woman last week, it was quickly followed up with a report that the actor and his longtime (not-so-) secret girlfriend, Katie Holmes, were on the outs. It didn’t take long for those split rumours to turn into a full-on breakup and chatter about how this mystery woman was involved got loud.

While Foxx has never uttered one word about Holmes over these last six years, he was quick to speak about Sela Vave, an aspiring singer/model/actress Foxx is trying to help out. He took to his Instagram stories and in a livestream video (via People), Jamie addressed the backlash Sela has been getting ever since they were photographed together, explaining she is simply a new artist he has taken under his wing. Just like he did with Ed Sheeran, Nick Cannon and Ne-Yo, Jamie is doing the same with Sela Vave. Think mentor and mentee. “When I met Ed Sheeran, I didn’t know him from Adam. He slept on my couch for six weeks—he ended up going on to do great things.” Look at him now.

Foxx continued, “Nick Cannon was 13 years old, he would sleep in my old house. Before Ne-Yo was Ne-Yo, he would come to the crib. Everybody comes to my crib, no matter who you are.” Including Vave, with whom he is doing the same thing. Sela sang on the front steps of his home and heard her potential right away. “She’s singing broken down Beyoncé, playing the guitar and I said, ‘How the f*ck did this happen?’ So, we took her under our wing.” Note the “we.”

Though perhaps because the other artists are male and Vave is a young beautiful woman, many assumed something fishy was going on. But Jamie, who doesn’t mention Katie at all in the lengthy video, wasn’t having it. “People try to make mountains out of molehills. We want to treat her the same way and give her the same opportunities. I told her it’s going to be this way. It’s a double standard when it comes to women.”

Foxx revealed that prior to all the gossip, he spoke to Vave’s mother, who put her trust in the actor. “We want to make sure she has the opportunity to show you the talent we saw,” he further explained. “All of the unnecessary hate for the woman, just because the guys are coming here and they’re working hard, but when a girl does it, she has an ulterior motive. Stop that sh*t. I embrace all the artists [who] come here. That’s our artist. She’s been brought into the family, she works hard, and she’s a beautiful singer.”

As for the photos of Jamie and Sela taken outside a nightclub last Friday, the star clarified that he was simply “escorting her to my car, to put her in the car,” pointing out that Vave “hangs out with my kids and is as young as my daughter,” implying that he wouldn’t go there.

Sela reposted Jamie’s video and had a snappy caption of her own for the haters out there.

Vave previously shared a photo of herself with Foxx in an Instagram post earlier this summer, expressing just how appreciative she is and what he’s done. That’s what family’s for.
