All you had to do was take one look at one of Amy Schumer’s posts while she was pregnant to know that her take on life after having her son, Gene, and motherhood in general would be hilarious. And Amy hasn’t disappointed. She tells it like it is and couldn’t be more brutally honest about the joys and struggles that can come with being a parent for the first time.
You know who else is struggling? Amy’s BFF, Jennifer Lawrence, who is having a hard time dealing with her friend’s inaccessibility. Schumer posted a recent text conversation (OK, maybe it was more one-sided) between herself and JLaw and for all of the moms out there with friends who don’t have children, or all the pals sans kids whose late-night texts go unanswered, this will be highly relatable.
Naturally, it involved a TV show (in Jen and Amy’s case, The Handmaid’s Tale) and as friends are inclined to do, Lawrence needed a plot refresher, but Schumer wasn’t there for her. And Jen had zero chill when Amy didn’t respond right away. Because she was asleep. Because she has a six-week-old. And that’s just what happens. Because most nights tend to be early for new moms, who will understandably drop literally anything and everything if it means they can get some moments of shut-eye and that means occasionally missing an SOS text about returning show.
While most understand that once you have a baby, everything changes, sometimes friends haven’t quite grasped that life is completely different. Though we’re happy that Schumer’s openness about sharing hilarious exchanges on her Instagram Stories has stayed the same. It was in April 2018 that Amy posted a screenshot of Jennifer asking her to hang out, but then abruptly cancelling the plans—before Amy could even reply.
Jen and Amy are basically friendship goals, having been pals for several years. They’ve seen each other through a breakup (Jen’s with director Darren Aronofsky), Amy’s marriage to Chris and Jen’s engagement to Cooke Maroney, though parenthood, they’re still working on. Now, if they can incorporate this part of their friendship in that screenplay they co-wrote together, that would be awesome.
For now, Schumer should keep doing her awesome mom thing and if that means putting Lawrence on notice, so be it. Though you know Jennifer totally understands. That’s what friends do.
