If there’s one thing we can thank Donald Trump for, and trust us, we’ve tried to find something redeeming, it’s that the 45th President of the United States has angered people so much that they’re finally taking an active role in politics. The latest celeb to get fed up with the Donald is Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence, who announced this week that she’s taking a year off from acting to focus on becoming more politically engaged.
Finally accepting that she is the true Katniss Everdeen, Lawrence is taking on President Snow, sorry, Trump, by stepping away for a year from acting to focus on activism. While promoting her new film Red Sparrow, Lawrence spoke with Entertainment Tonight and said that she has plans to use her platform to get young people engaged in local politics. “I’m going to take the next year off,” said Lawrence. “I’m going to be working with this organization as a part of Represent.Us, trying to get young people engaged politically on a local level.”
The actor went on to say that the organization does not favour one party over another, but rather aims to fix the government at every level. “It doesn’t have anything to do with partisan [politics]. It’s just anti-corruption and stuff trying to pass state by state laws that can help prevent corruption, fix our democracy.”
She *is* the Mockingjay!
This isn’t the first time Lawrence has used her platform to help spark change. She’s previously written about the wage gap in Hollywood and in December 2017, Lawrence was honoured with the Sherry Lansing Leadership Award at the Hollywood Reporter’s 2017 Women In Entertainment Power 100 event. “It’s not easy to speak out. It’s not easy to face criticism on a global scale,” said Lawrence during her acceptance speech.
“But the fact is I have been given a platform, and if I don’t use it, then I don’t deserve it. This last year has been a trying and challenging time in our world and our industry specifically. Every day, we wake up to a myriad of headlines that deeply impact us, from around the globe.” In January, the actor surprised fans by posting a picture at the Women’s Day March in Los Angeles with Cameron Diaz and Adele.
The most influential people in my life have always been women. My family, my friends, my teachers, my colleagues, and my idols. I am obsessed with all the women in my life. I adore them and need them more and more every day. I am so grateful to be a woman, I wouldn’t change it for the world. I hope I’m not only defined by my gender though. I hope I’m defined by my input to the world, my ability to love and to have empathy. To raise my son to be a a good man alongside the good man who loves me for everything I am and am not. I want what’s best for people, I think we all do. We just can’t agree on what that is. Power to the peaceful, power to the people x #womensmarch2018
Lawrence is the latest celeb to step away from her day job to become more politically involved in the wake of the new administration. Chelsea Handler recently left her show Chelsea to work on helping more women get elected to local office. Dwayne Johnson has also said that he would consider running for President in 2020, bringing a whole new meaning to the ‘Rock the Vote’ slogan.
