In six complete seasons of The Amazing Race Canada, we’ve watched 62 teams put aside hunger, fears, and overall physical exhaustion for a chance to win the Canadian version of the long-running reality staple. But never in the show’s history have one of those teams had a second chance to run this race.
So when CTV announced that the upcoming seventh season would switch things up with a brand new “Canada’s Choice” twist, in which viewers got to vote one team back in, we got excited. After all, it’s not every day that a fan favourite team returns. In the end it was season one competitors Jethro “Jet” Black and David “Dave” Schram who got the chance to race again, which really only meant one thing: the pressure was on.
They want to do right by their fans
“We feel a ton of pressure, honestly. Not that we needed any more pressure, but these people who voted for us, 98 per cent of them are complete strangers. They’ve never met us, they’re not our friends, our family. They took time out of their day… some people took time out of their weeks to vote for us,” Schram says. “I don’t want to say no one wants this more than we do because all the teams want this. But we do have the added pressure of being voted on. I just hope now that we can channel that pressure and make diamonds out of it.”
As fans will recall, CTV opened up viewer voting on Twitter and on the Amazing Race Canada website in late March, allowing us to choose between Jet and Dave (who finished fourth in the inaugural season), season three brothers Brent and Sean Sweeney, and season four’s mother-daughter duo Frankie and Amy Gassler.
They’re the same guys they always were
In the end it was the great friendship and their season one antics and pranks that catapulted them to a grand return, but lots has changed about the race since then. For one, the show has started incorporating international countries into the overall route (season one was contained to Canadian stops). For another, the challenges have evolved and grown tougher, which means these BFFs could be feeling the time gap in returning to the series more than half a decade later. When the new season kicks off on July 2 though, these guys promise much more of what earned them the only ever second-chance spot in the show’s history: their same old selves.
“I’m wearing the same hat and the same shoes right now that I was eliminated in Newfoundland in,” Schram says.
“If you liked what you saw in season one we really haven’t changed a bit,” Black adds. “Dave’s changed his hair. Otherwise we’re the same lovable guys, but with a little more perspective on the race. I anticipate us going in with the same jovial attitude, but fingers crossed we’ll have a little more success at the end of the day.”
Fingers crossed indeed.
Jet and Dave return to The Amazing Race Canada when the new season kicks off Tuesday, July 2 at 9 p.m. Et on CTV.
