One of the best things about watching the lovable curmudgeon Jimmy Kimmel on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, or hosting an awards show like the Oscars, is that he never holds back when making fun of celebrities to their faces. (let’s not forget, this is the man who forces celebs to read mean tweets for our amusement). Now, ABC and the Television Academy have named Kimmel the host of the 72nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards to take place later this year. It's great if you love some good Jimmy razzing, but less great when you realize it's probably going to have to happen over Zoom.Kimmel, who has hosted the Emmys twice before, will helm the 2020 edition on September 20th at 8pm, but details are scarce on what the awards show will look like in the age of COVID-19, physical distancing, and stay-at-home orders. Even Kimmel, as he announced the news on twitter, had a lot of questions. “I don’t know where or how or even why we are doing this,” he tweeted, “but we are and I am hosting it!” Will the red carpet just be a Zoom conference call? Will the winners receive their awards in the mail? Will the whole ceremony be Jimmy standing alone in a massive concert theatre yelling into a camera?President of ABC entertainment, Karey Burke, seems to be pretty sure Jimmy will figure out a way to make the evening a memorable one. She said in a statement to Variety, “We know Jimmy Kimmel will deliver a uniquely entertaining, funny and moving Primetime Emmy’s show. He’s a true master of ceremonies who reveres this industry and its people; and just as Jimmy has done with his own show over the past few months, he will tackle this momentous event with heart and humour, and bring some much-needed joy and optimism to our television colleagues and viewers at home.”[video_embed id='1977632']RELATED: Oscars announce new inclusion standards [/video_embed]Kimmel has displayed loads of that “heart and humour” on Jimmy Kimmel Live! since the COVID-19 global pandemic began, as he quickly switched to an at-home format (as did all the other late night talk show hosts), and used his show to highlight the plight of frontline healthcare and emergency workers. Lately, he's employed the help of both Jennifer Aniston and Courtney Cox to surprise nurses doing all they can to battle the novel coronavirus.Other award shows, like the MTV Video Music Awards, have also announced they are all-systems-go for 2020, but still aren’t sure what the show will look like or even if it will be in-person or via Zoom.[video_embed id='1974045']BEFORE YOU GO: Chris Cuomo accidently bares it all on his wife’s Instagram live [/video_embed]
