The world has lost another comic legend. Joan Rivers died Thursday, Sept. 4 at the age of 81. Her daughter, Melissa Rivers, confirmed the sad news in a statement, adding, “My mother’s greatest joy in life was to make people laugh. Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon.”
So let’s grant Joan her wish and honour her by remembering her hilarious words that sometimes got her into trouble but always had us laughing.

On her career…

“I don’t mince words. I don’t hold back. What are you gonna do to me? Fire me? It’s been done. Take away my show? Done! Not invite me to the Vanity Fair party? I’ve never been invited!”

On plastic surgery…

“I wish I had a twin, so I could know what I’d look like without plastic surgery.”
Joan Rivers and Miss Piggy

On travel…

“The fun of working on the road means stealing from hotels. I’ve been doing it for so long, I have a set of towels from the Ark.”

On beauty…

“Looking 50 is great—if you’re 60.”

On success…

“I succeeded by saying what everyone is thinking.”

On sex…

“You know you’re getting old when you buy a sexy sheer nightgown and don’t know anyone who can see through it.”
Joan Rivers Diamonds

On love…

“My love life is like a piece of Swiss cheese; most of it’s missing, and what’s there stinks.”

On regrets…

“I’ve learned to have absolutely no regrets about any jokes I’ve ever done.”

On getting old…

“I must admit I am nervous about getting Alzheimer’s. Once it hits, I might tell my best joke and never know it.”
Joan Rivers and Johnny Carson
Rivers would probably say she was made of plastic but we think she was seemingly made of stone. She may have offended some (OK, many) but she really did break ground, be it for her stand-up comedy, her talk show, her late-night appearances, her red carpet interviews and her biting commentary on Fashion Police and reality show Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best?. She will be missed.
