For those who may not recall, John Galliano was embroiled in scandal in 2011 after a video surfaced showing the fashion designer making anti-Semitic remarks at a Paris cafe. Among those remarks was the statement, “I love Hitler.” But that was 2011, and Galliano has since apologized for what he said, and he even took the reins as creative director at Maison Martin Margiela – his first show with the label took place this year at London Fashion Week.

And now, the man who once proclaimed to love Adolf Hitler, will be conducting a speaking engagement at a synagogue in London. It seems synagogues in the U.K. are trying to revamp their image, or, as the site for the event puts it, to act “as a way of bringing Jews and Jewish learning back into the West End.”

The event, titled “Connect – Fashion with John Galliano,” will have two additional speakers: Rabbi Sam Taylor from Western Marble Arch; and Maureen Kendler from the London School of Jewish studies.

So, yeah, it’s all a bit strange and we don’t quite get the connection between religion and designing couture, but perhaps this is an instance where Rabbi knows best.
