In 2018, we’re living in a TV land of reboots and remakes, and for those of us who live for re-runs of our favourite sitcoms, it’s a great time to be alive. This TV season alone has seen the return of Will & Grace and the upcoming reboot of Roseanne, which premieres at the end of March. Now it’s looking like The Office could be making its way back to TV, but what about its stars? Well, we now know that lead actor John Krasinski is waiting to receive a phone call.
During an interview this week with Ellen DeGeneres, the talk show host brought up the rumours and asked Krasinski whether he had heard about the possible reboot. “I did hear that on the internet. Guess who didn’t get a call? Me. What does that say,” joked Krasinkski. “NBC is like, you know who we didn’t like? Jim.”
“They wouldn’t do it without you,” said DeGeneres. “Well, it looks like they are,” joked Krasinski.
Thankfully, if the phone call does come in, Krasinski would be ready to dust off his old brown suit. “Would you do it?” asked DeGeneres. “Oh my god, are you kidding? I would love to do it,” said Krasinski. “I would love to get that gang back together.”
In December 2017, NBC confirmed they were considering a reboot of The Office for the 2018 – 2019 TV season. Few details were given at the time, but the TV network did say that they had been in talks with showrunner Greg Daniels. The station also confirmed that Steve Carell, who played lovable but dimwitted Regional Manager Michael Scott for seven of the show’s nine seasons would not be returning.
One way the upcoming reboot of The Office differs from other series currently being revived on television is that The Office has only been off the air since 2013. It has recently had a resurgence in popularity and found a younger audience thanks to streaming, with Krasinski’s co-star Jenna Fischer appearing on Conan this month, joking that she now has teens approach her in grocery stores to tell her she looks like an older version of her character Pam Halpert.
Fans of the show likely can’t imagine a reboot without Jim and Pam. Who will we swoon for in the office? Who will organize the Office Olympics? Bus trips to get pie? Who will clean the microwave? Who will torment Dwight?
There is a possible reason for Krasinski’s lack of involvement so far in the upcoming reboot and that’s storyline. Krasinski’s character Jim left the paper office of Dunder Mifflin in Scranton, PA in the series finale to move to Philadelphia with his wife Pam and their two children. We can’t forget about Athlead! Although, if Roseanne can bring Dan Connor back from the dead and Will & Grace can pretend they never have kids, we think getting Jim and Pam back to Dunder Mifflin shouldn’t be too difficult.
The American series is a remake of Ricky Gervais’ British version of The Office, which aired for two seasons in the UK. Gervais, who was a producer on the American remake, may be looking to go for round three, with new actors. Let’s be honest, anyone who has ever worked in an office knows there’s enough stories to fill a whole new TV series.
