Oops, he did it again, but today he explained why: “he” being John Travolta, and “it” being a notable award show slip up. After a memorable mishap at the 2014 Oscars where he mispronounced Idina Menzel’s name, Travolta was back in the news earlier this week after a gaffe at the VMAs.

While presenting the Video of the Year award to Taylor Swift for her single You Need To Calm Down, Travolta attempted to hand the Moon Man to drag queen and RuPaul’s Drag Race alum Jade Jolie, who bears a striking resemblance to Swift.

Twitter did as Twitter does in moments like this, and the video clip spread like wildfire.

So, what did the man at the center of it all have to say? Travolta took to the airwaves today to comment on the viral moment.

He took it all in stride, saying he was glad that something “so light and insignificant” could go viral in a time when most of the news is so heavy. “There’s so many people that bombarded the stage, that I was looking for (Swift). So the video has me trying to find her, but you know, I thought it was so funny the way it was interpreted. And it was cool, I didn’t care,” he said. He also added that he and Swift are pretty close: “I’ve been friends with Taylor Swift, she’s been so good to my daughter and my wife during concerts, I’ve written her notes and she’s written me back.” Who knew?

Jade Jolie’s Drag Race friends and fans loved the moment too:

Jolie spoke out on the moment, explaining what happened from her perspective:

“We were walking to the stage, and Taylor was hugging everyone, and I happened to make it to the podium first, and I definitely felt John Travolta gravitating to me. It was a very sweet and flattering mistake, and I like to think I did my job right and looked just like Taylor!”

It seems that John Travolta wasn’t the only one to fall victim to Jolie’s spot-on Swift impersonation game. She also shared:

“Well, funny enough, when we were walking in the back [during the VMAs], where it’s mainly dancers and stuff, I got tired of saying, “No, I’m not her,” so I just started hugging people! “So nice to meet you, too!” And at the after-party Gigi Hadid kept thinking I was Taylor—they’re really good friends. The drunker we got, I guess the more Taylor I became for everyone!”

And what did Swift herself think? Friend and frequent collaborator Todrick Hall shared that she “thought it was hilarious.” Noting that Jolie has made a living as one of the top drag queens and famous Swift lookalike, Hall also said that Travolta’s confusion was “the highest compliment he could ever pay her,” and we’re inclined to agree.

Looks like John Travolta has danced his way out of yet another awards show controversy. Third time’s a charm, right?
