Keanu Reeves’ iconic take as the ruthless assassin John Wick may be the stuff of legends, but he contributed even more to the ever-expanding franchise than fans originally thought. Apparently everyone has Reeves to thank for the film’s title itself, but not because he had any kind of specific foresight or anything. In reality, he just couldn’t keep the old title straight.Would you have had a hard time remembering Scorn? Or does it just not have the same ring to it as John Wick? Whatever the reason, Keanu kept getting tripped up. In the pre-interviews and press leading up to production he kept referring to the movie as John Wick. Eventually the studio just decided to go with it, according to Comicbook.com. "The only reason it's called John Wick is that Keanu kept referring to it as John Wick," writer Derek Kolstad told the publication. "Marketing was like, 'Dude, that's four to five million dollars in free advertising so far, so it's John Wick instead of Scorn.' I can't imagine it being Scorn now."[video_embed id='5982209160001']RELATED: Sandra Bullock reveals what she thought of 'Speed' co-star Keanu Reeves[/video_embed]If you think about it, Scorn makes sense. After all the movie is about a guy who’s been scorned and comes out of retirement to get revenge on the guys who broke into his house and killed his dog. (They quickly learned you don’t mess with Baba Yaga.) But given how much of a franchise the original story turned into it’s almost better that things worked out the way that they did.Following the film’s 2014 theatrical release, which earned $86 million US at the box office, a sequel was quickly delivered. John Wick 2 hit theatres in 2017 and made $171.5 million US. A third installment came out last year, topping the first two films with a box office showing of $326.7 million US. Naturally, Hollywood always wants to make a good thing last, and so the fourth film is expected to be released in 2022. (It was going to be earlier, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, it was delayed.)Meanwhile, a John Wick prequel series called The Continental, which was originally announced in 2017, is supposedly still happening. Earlier this year at the 2020 Winter Television Critics Press Tour, STARZ boss Jeffrey Hirsch revealed that he had recently taken a pitch for the series and that his team was trying to tie things together so that it wouldn’t interfere with the new film’s release. “It will air sometime after the fourth movie,” he said, noting the prequel takes place long before the events of the first film.As for whether or not Reeves will be involved? Hirsch didn’t get into specifics, choosing to leave everyone with a tease instead. “That’s a really good question that I’m not going to answer,” he said. “No answer is as good a tease as you’re going to get. It’s a great franchise, we’re exciting about bringing that show to the network.”If The Continental changes its title to John Wick: The TV Series, then we’ll know that Keanu's impact is next-level.[video_embed id='-1']BEFORE YOU GO: Pup carrying a giant stick determined to bring it into the dog park[/video_embed]
