Just when you think Johnny Depp has nothing better to do with his time than issue awkward public apologies with his wife, he goes and proves just how game he is.
Depp put on his full Mad Hatter costume, wig, makeup and those crazy-creepy eyes and surprised visitors at Disneyland through an interactive billboard — dare we say, looking glass? — that was fitted with a hidden camera. He could see and hear what they were saying, and park guests were more than happy to play along — though they didn’t know they were playing along with the real thing.
Depp greets, winks, waves, and smiles at passersby, but it’s when he starts talking to them that’s the fun part. Because the Disneylanders can’t get over just how advanced Disney’s technology is. At one point, he yells, “Ouch!” when a woman leans against the screen, tells a child whom he asks to fit for a hat that she has “a wonderful cranium” and refers to one gal by name. Oh, and don’t even get us started on Hatter snot.
All right, it wasn’t for purely unselfish reasons; Depp has Alice Through the Looking Glass hitting theatres on May 27 and his Mad Hatter is at the centre of it all. But it’s still awesome to see that despite how big a star he is, that Johnny is up for something like this. Very cool, Depp.
