Johnny Depp is a very talented actor, but you wouldn’t know it if you’d based your assessment on his last few movies. Since 2010, he seems to have traded in his “elder statesman of cool” mantle for a decidedly more pedestrian approach: playing cartoonishly bright heroes and villains in, quite frankly, sub-par movies.
A publicity photo of him dressed in character as (presumably), The Big Bad Wolf from upcoming film Into The Woods surfaced online Wednesday. And it’s not pretty. Oh no.
Yet even if the costume didn’t exactly blow the house down (sorry, wrong wolf) there was something familiar about how he looked. Here’s what popped into our minds at The Loop when we say Johnny’s new look…
Sir Digby Chicken Caesar
The fan-favourite character from surreal British comedy team Mitchell & Webb, Sir Digby Chicken Caesar is a homeless detective. Depp’s general unkempt look (not to mention questionable mustache) reminded us quite a bit of this guy. Dun-dun-dun-dahhhh!
Tex Avery’s wolf The cheesy suit and the cheesy everything about Depp’s get-up screams a Tex Avery influence. You can’t wear a zoot suit and look like a wolf without delving somewhat into old Tex Avery cartoons, can you now?
There’s something deliciously old-timey about Depp’s entire get-up, and it reminds us more than a little of American singer Tom Waits (who’s work is difficult to sum up in one sentence but we highly recommend Blue Valentine, if you’re asking).
The Talking Heads
Oversized, ill-fitting pinstripe suits.
Those eyebrows are so gloriously giant, like two nesting king caterpillars. Same with Depp’s curious brow situation, they’re hard not to notice right away.
A ridiculous mustache
Lyft cars are famous for their giant pink mustaches which you can spot a mile away. Now, you’ll be able to spot Johnny Depp a mile away because he has a ridiculous mustache on his face. Have-you-seen-that-thing-holy-cow.
