Yep, you read that right. Oscar winner Jordan Peele will produce a documentary series about a woman in the 1990s who cut off her husband’s penis.
For those who are unfamiliar with the story, a woman named Lorena Gallo Bobbitt made headlines in 1993 when she cut off the penis of her husband. She claimed it was self defence, saying her husband, John Wayne, had raped her earlier than night. Wayne later had his penis reattached. Bobbitt was found not guilty due to temporary insanity and became a household name thanks to the tabloid coverage.
The four part series, produced for Amazon, is titled Lorena and comes during a time of plenty of #MeToo stories and that fact isn’t lost on Peele.
“Lost in the tabloid coverage and jokes was the opportunity for a national discussion on domestic and sexual assault in America,” the press release says, noting that the series is set to be released in time for the 25th anniversary of the case.
The series will look at how the case laid the groundwork for the modern 24-hour news cycle and the increase sensationalized media coverage.
“When we hear the name ‘Bobbitt’ we think of one of the most sensational incidents to ever be catapulted into a full blown media spectacle,” Peele says. “With this project, Lorena has a platform to tell her truth as well as engage in a critical conversation about gender dynamics, abuse, and her demand for justice. This is Lorena’s story and we’re honoured to help her tell it.”
The series does not yet have a release date but with Peele’s ongoing success with Get Out it is sure to be thrilling.
