Sometimes couples end their relationships on amicable terms, and that’s great. But in a world full of celebrities making conscious uncoupling announcements and declarations of love in the midst of a separation, it’s kind of refreshing to have someone keep it real—sometimes break ups happen because people change for the worse and it sucks. The latest celeb to get real with fans is the Big Bang Theory star Kaley Cuoco, who recently opened up about her divorce.
Appearing on the cover of the May edition of Cosmopolitan, Cuoco speaks candidly about her marriage to Tennis pro Ryan Sweeting. The two wed in December 2013 after five months of dating and announced their divorce in September 2015. Following the pair’s initial split, there were rumors that the main cause of the separation was Sweeting’s addiction to pain medication, though Cuoco has not commented directly on the allegations.
What Cuoco is being clear about is who was at fault for the marriage ending and according to the actor, it wasn’t her. “I married someone the first time who completely changed,” Cuoco told Cosmo. “The person I ended up with was not the person I originally met. And that wasn’t my fault—that was his. I knew how much I had to give and how much I wanted to receive.”
Cuoco says that the end of her marriage with Sweeting was bad enough to make the actor think she would never walk down the aisle again. “I honestly thought I wouldn’t get married again. My ex ruined that word for me.”
Thankfully, the TV star made lemonade out of lemons and now acknowledges that her first marriage put her on the path to meeting her fiancé, Karl Cook, a professional equestrian. “I knew I just had to be patient…I had to go through a lot of things, but it brought me to Karl.”
Cuoco and Cook began dating in September 2016 and got engaged in November 2017. Cuoco has yet to announce when the two will marry, but she’s already taken more time with this relationship than her first marriage. It’s not a mistake if you learn from it, right?
