It looks like Joe Biden and Donald Trump just got some competition in the upcoming US Presidential Election. Every time we think this year can’t get any weirder or more alienating, the universe ups the ante. Move over murder hornets, Kanye West is running for president. TBH, this news is significantly less shocking in July than it would have been in January. The bar for surprising news is exceptionally low at this point in 2020.On July 4, West celebrated America’s independence by announcing he was running for head of state. Does West really think that Americans will vote for someone who has appeared on reality TV and never held an elected seat in public office? Oh, right. Elon Musk was quick to endorse West, tweeting “You have my full support!” West’s wife and possible future FLOTUS and Minister of Justice, Kim Kardashian West, responded with a simple American flag emoji. This isn’t the first time West has announced that he was running for office. Back in 2015 at the MTV VMAs, West accepted the Video Vanguard Award and announced his intention to run. Closing out his almost eight-minute speech (good luck with timed debates, Kanye), West told the crowd “I have decided in 2020 to run for president.” It’s possible the rapper and fashion designer may have forgotten about his political aspirations until this month. He’s been busy! The late addition of West means that the rapper is unable to get on the ballot for several states as an independent candidate, including New Mexico, Texas and Maine. West’s new home state of Wyoming is still accepting candidates, so Kanye better be friendly with his neighbours. It appears that West’s only move towards the White House so far has been Saturday’s tweet and the Yeezy designer has yet to present a platform, register with the Federal Election Commission or collect enough signatures to be added to the ballot. As of March, West was still not registered to vote in the upcoming election. Details, schmetails, right?West and Kardashian West have made a handful of trips to the White House since President Trump has been in office. While Kardashian West has been advocating for criminal justice reform and the release of first-time, non-violent offenders, West has worn a MAGA hat and posed for photos. Can Kim run instead?West’s announcement has already begun wreaking havoc as many are concerned that the rapper’s move will take votes away from Biden and help Trump’s chances for a second term. It’s even forced us to agree with Piers Morgan. How dare you, Kanye. Responses to West’s announcement have ranged from outraged to entertained. Comedian Tiffany Haddish spoofed West with her own tweet announcing her run for presidency along with VP Dave Chapelle. America’s experiment of letting a celebrity into the White House has been an unabashed failure. Trump's ongoing mishandling of the coronavirus pandemic has contributed to thousands of deaths as the country leads the world in COVID-19 fatalities, a number that continues to rise daily. Every American has the right to run for office, but that doesn’t mean they should.West is likely looking for publicity with his new announcement, but the US needs a qualified candidate now more than ever, not someone grabbing headlines for funsies. There is no room for fun in 2020. The country is on fire. People’s lives are literally at stake in the upcoming election and another term of uneducated and divisive leadership could be catastrophic for Americans and the rest of the world.
