Style trends differ around the world — the laidback, tights-and-hoodie look that’s at home on the streets of Los Angeles would stand out amongst the wool coats and cigarette pants of Paris, and vice versa. And as much of a faux pas as that may be, wearing tights as pants in a Parisien cafe — mon dieu! — there are worse style offenses that could be made. Just ask future member of the British royal family, Meghan Markle.
Because when it comes to dressing for the types of dos that Duchesses and Princes get invited to, there’s more than just the cultural norms to worry about. There’s royal protocol to adhere to.
Lucky for Meghan, who will likely become the Duchess of Sussex in May when she and Prince Harry marry, she’s got her super stylish big sis-in-law, the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, to look out for her. And Kate’s been around the royal block a time or two.
According to a source for Entertainment Tonight: “[Duchess Catherine] has also been advising Meghan about royal fashion, what protocol is expected and how she may have to adapt in the future. She has provided Meghan with names of some of the favourite UK go-to designers on everything from dresses, coats and the all-important British hat.”
How adorable is that? Clearly Meghan must be taking Kate’s advice to heart because we’ve spotted the bride-to-be blending key pieces from British designers with some of her fav go-to brands.
During her first public outing with Her Royal Highness earlier this month, Meghan was snapped in a stunning white coat, hat and navy sheath dress by British designer Amanda Wakeley — surely a style tip via Kate. That same day, Meghan also finally wore sheer nylons in public, a first since her engagement but a part of the must-wear Royal Fashion Code. We like to imagine it was also Kate who coaxed Meghan to pull on a pair of hose before the outing.
Elements of this royal style is also something of a nod to Prince Harry’s and Prince William’s late mother, Princess Diana.
“Like Kate, expect Meghan to make the occasional nod to her husband’s fashion icon mother,” said the Entertainment Tonight source. “Both Kate and Meghan will no doubt honour Princess Diana with designs that reflect her likes and style.”
But fashion is just one of the areas that Meghan has been working to bring up to royal standards. According to ET’s source, she’s also enlisted in etiquette classes, so she can tell her many silver spoons apart, as well as speech classes to help her soften her American accent and pick up on the appropriate British colloquialisms.
All eyes are on the 36-year-old former Suits actress as she transitions from civilian to royalty. She’s clearly been doing her homework, and we can’t wait to see what other British designers Megan chooses… with help from Kate, of course.
