The Duchess of Cambridge has been MIA, except for major events, since giving birth to her and Prince William’s third little royal, Louis, in April. Kate Middleton returned from her maternity leave Tuesday to visit the Sayers Croft Trust Forest School and Wildlife Garden at Paddington Recreation Ground.

The outdoor learning centre is a “camp school,” which aims to teach inner city children a love of nature and how to care for the environment. It gives kids who might otherwise not have access to large outdoor spaces a chance to experience the forest as well as build interpersonal skills like teamwork and community values in a fun environment.
In a casual outfit, including an army green jacket and riding boots, the Duchess debuted a new shorter haircut for the occasion (something she also did, Elle notes, upon her post-Charlotte return).
Middleton attended storytime, made leaf crowns, helped with gardening and even went on a “minibeast” (bug) hunt with the primary-aged children. She also shared with the four and five year-olds that she often goes on “spider hunts” with George and Charlotte too.

She made particular friends with a four-year-old girl named Anwaar who made the Duchess laugh on several occasions including when she called for more juice after finishing hers at storytime and then proceeded to play with her cup.
And in case you were wondering if Middleton is as much the people’s princess as Meghan Markle proved herself to be by shutting that car door last week, it looks like she totally is. Video of the Duchess arriving at the school shows her making a motion to close her own door.

Looks like Meghan’s not the only modern royal.
