It’s been nearly nine years since we last saw Izzie Stevens in the halls of what was then known as Seattle Grace. The character was fired during the hospital’s merger with Mercy West and the IRL departure was almost as controversial. Izzie’s portrayer, Katherine Heigl and Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhines hashed out an agreement that released the actress from her contract immediately. Heigl left the hit show in Season 6, with reports that she was a diva (no thanks to that Emmy drama) who wanted to focus on her film career. Katie denied it all, insisting it was to spend more time with her family.
Fast-forward to now when her Grey’s character’s ex-husband, Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) officially moved on when he married Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington) at the end of last season. Heigl just learned of the news and her reaction is exactly what we needed to hear.
“Oh my God!,” Heigl told TVLine. “Well, that’s exciting. Alex needed to find love — true love.”
Hmm, well, that’s Heigl’s reaction. Would Izzie also give her blessing?
“I don’t know,” she mused. “I’d have to start wondering where Izzie is. Like, what is she doing? Where did she go? I would hope that she pursued her [medical] career … She could have children by now. She could be married … If she has moved on, then I would expect Izzie to be very happy for him. She would want him to be happy.”
Aw, sweet. But if Izzie was single, it would probably be a different story. “She’d be jealous [of Jo] for sure, right? She’d want him to hold out for her.”
So true. Izzie would totally want Alex to still be pining for her. That being said, Alex and Jo are safe as Izzie won’t be returning to Grey Sloan Memorial anytime soon since Rhimes has a “no a**holes policy.” Ouch.
But don’t cry for Heigl. She’s doing just fine, thank you very much. The actress joins the new — and new-looking — season of Suits where she will be playing Samantha Wheeler, whom she describes as “one of the most interesting and badass women I’ve had the opportunity to play.” Fun TV times ahead.
