The Katy Perry–Orlando Bloom relationship has been shrouded in mystery ever since its inception, but Monday night Katy spilled all the deets from their first meeting to their comedy of errors engagement. She told Jimmy Kimmel how the evening was super romantic overall, but had a “funny part” involving a shattered champagne bottle in a helicopter.
“It was very sweet, it was Valentine’s Day… we went to dinner and I thought we were going to go and see some art after dinner but we pulled up to a helicopter,” Perry said. “It was really sweet. He asked me to marry him in a helicopter.”

“We had champagne in the helicopter and the [ring] box was in his pocket and he had written down everything he wanted to say in a note to divert – he was going to pull [the box] out while I was reading it,” she continued. “So I’m reading it but I’m hearing, like, the champagne is broken, the bottle is everywhere and I’m still looking at the note because he’s pulling out this box that’s too big for his coat pocket and it rips his coat pocket and his elbow goes into the champagne and I’m like, ‘No, I’m just reading the note; no, you’re not doing anything.'”
All was forgiven quickly though because (obviously) she said “yes” and when they landed, he had a whole party set up.
“We landed and it was like James Bond – everybody had an earpiece – and then we went downstairs – we landed on a rooftop – and my whole family was there and all my friends,” Katy said. “He did so well.”
If you’re one of the hyper-observant fans who noted that Perry’s engagement ring looks an awful lot like the one Orlando gave ex-wife Miranda Kerr, Katy laid all that weirdness to rest during her appearance too. Jimmy asked if Perry picked out her own ring and she answered pointedly, “I voiced my opinion.”
Honestly, it makes sense both women have similar taste in jewellery — they obviously have similar taste in men too.
An In-N-Out fairy tale
Katy also shared the story of how she and Orlando met and bonded over In-N-Out Burger (a California fast food chain).
“In-N-Out plays a big role in my life,” Perry started. “We bonded over an In-N-Out burger about three years [ago] at the Golden Globes… He stole one off of my table — I was sitting with Denzel Washington – and he took it and I was like, “Wait! No who—oh, you’re so hot. Fine take it.’
“And then I saw him at a party and I was like, ‘How are those onions resting on your molars?’” she continued. “He’s like, ‘I like you,’ and then you know, cut to [holds up ring].”
They’re a little unconventional, but we’re rooting for these two.
