And you thought everyone worth their salt was at the royal wedding? While most of us were watching our fave new couple exchanging ‘I do’s, plenty of our other celeb faves were getting dolled up for various occasions. There was a strong show at the Billboard Music Awards, with Taylor Swift, Jennifer Lopez, and Christina Aguilera appearing with varying levels of fashion success, and Cannes jury members saved their fashion best for last. Join us as we peruse this week’s style winners and losers…

Taylor Swift
It looks like the old Taylor can come to the phone right now. For a surprise red carpet outing at the Billboard Music Awards, T-Swift opted for glamourous pale pink Versace. Looking at this, we can’t help but be reminded of her outfit at the infamous 2009 MTV VMAs, and no doubt this slinky, embellished number is a style winner.
Style Winner Getty ImagesTyra Banks
Is it just us, or does Tyra resemble a Disney villain in this exaggerated velvet dress at the BBMAs? Those puffy sleeves, high neck, cutout, and cinched-in waist create a caricature-ish look, and it’s doing her no favours whatsoever.
Style Loser Getty ImagesKaty Perry
Fulfilling her American Idol duties, Katy Perry stepped out looking part Dolly Parton, part Las Vegas performer – and we’re not digging either half of this confused, garish concoction. Shoulders up, she looks great, but that feathered and beaded overcoat are straight outta the ‘70s – and not in a good way.
Style Loser Getty ImagesJohn Legend
Also at the BBMAs was new father-of-two Mr. Legend. Looking cheerful and sprightly, he looks fit for a country club in light pants, shirt, and a printed sports jacket. Most people would struggle to work this on a red carpet – lucky John’s not most people.
Style Winner Getty ImagesMila Kunis
Mila, is that you? We almost didn’t recognise you with those bangs and that random shoulder cutout. Stepping out at the BBMAs, the actress looks like an extra from a futuristic space movie in this black and silver look. The outfit itself isn’t terrible, but needs a few key tweaks to qualify as a fashion hit.
Style Loser Getty ImagesLaura Dern
In this rather understated polka dot dress with a peep of a flirty black bodice, Laura keeps things crisply simple. It’s a refreshing take on glitzier red carpet fare, proving that less is sometimes more.
Style Winner Getty ImagesKesha
This very country look is quite the statement. The large hat, wild fringing, and floral patterning make for a loud look. We love you, Kesha... if only we could say the same for your style.
Style Loser Getty ImagesBusy Philipps
Busy’s been living up to her name of late, promoting her hubby’s latest flick. But that hasn’t stopped the fashion misfires – this gimmicky gown is nothing short of ridiculous, to say nothing of that red eyeshadow. Sorry Busy, maybe next time.
Style Loser Getty ImagesChristina Aguilera
In line with her newly pared down look, the songstress looks refined in this off-shoulder pinstriped dress and natural makeup. It’s not what we would have picked for her, but it’s refreshingly winning.
Style Winner Getty ImagesRachel Bilson
It’s been a minute since we’ve seen our favourite OC alum on the red carpet, and what a welcome return it is. We’re appreciating the simple printed dress, jazzed up with a smart, tailored jacket. And that half up, half down ‘do? Just perfect.
Style Winner Getty ImagesLéa Seydoux
Also at Cannes’s closing was fellow jury member Léa, absolutely slamming it in this almost outrageously sparkly number. We love the details too, including the middle thigh-high slit and gold patterning on the shoulders. It’s fabulous, over-the-top, and just perfect for the occasion.
Style Winner Getty ImagesYara Shahidi
How refreshing is Yara’s candy pink two-piece? Even with those casual sneakers, the tailoring of the outfit creates a casual elegance, and we’re enjoying that beaming smile.
Style Winner Getty ImagesJennifer Lopez
Oh dear JLo, oh dear. The only thing worse than this very badly put together outfit is that terribly lacklustre ‘do. The clashing textures, cutouts and terrible accessorising make this a complete fashion fail.
Style Loser Getty ImagesCate Blanchett
For the closing of the Cannes film festival, jury president Cate chose to channel her inner Kylo Ren – and we’re kind of into it. Sure, the red and black combo cut is a little out there, but the unusual blend of jacket, dress, and cape in one outfit has us compelled. It’s perfectly in keeping with Cate’s status as fashion innovator, and for that we applaud.
Style Winner Getty ImagesAva DuVernay
Now that’s how it’s done, Ava! The director and fellow jury member finally turns up at the end of the Cannes film festival in this delicious cerise draped gown. The cut is subtle, but goes for maximum impact, and along with the perfectly matching lip, and flash of bling in the bracelet and rings, strikes just the right note.
