Katy Perry isn’t letting a little thing like a copyright lawsuit and paying $550,000 in damages over her 2013 song ‘Dark Horse’ get in the way of releasing new music. The popstar teased what many fans suspect are the lyrics to a new single called “Small Talk,” with Perry uploading three images to her Instagram account on Tuesday.
Using the same image of a notepad that includes the header “From the desk of Katy Perry,” Perry posted the lyrics in three separate Instagram messages, with the first including the lines “Isn’t it weird / That you’ve seen me naked / We had conversations about forever / Now it’s about the weather okay.” The second message read, “Isn’t it wild / That I know your weakness / And everybody at the party thinks / That you’re the best since sliced bread.” Finally, Perry completed the lyric tease with the line, “I just can’t believe / We went from strangers to lovers to / Strangers in a lifetime.”
Reading into the lyrics, it’s possible that Perry is writing about fiancé Orlando Bloom. The pair dated for years before breaking up, eventually reconciling and getting engaged this year on Valentine’s Day. We could see Bloom being compared to sliced bread. Those Pirates of the Caribbean movies are still pretty great.
Perry hasn’t teased the actual music for the song, so we’re not sure whether it’s going to be an up-tempo bop or dark bop (it’s Perry, so we know it’s a bop), but it appears that it will be written with Charlie Puth. During an Instagram live session, Puth essentially confirmed his involvement in the song when asked about it by a fan. “What do you mean you know about ‘Small Talk’,” said Puth, who has not previously worked with Perry. “What! How do you know about that? Geez, is anything a secret nowadays?” The answer to that is, not really.

Perry’s “Small Talk” will likely act as the follow up to “Never Really Over,” which the American Idol judge released in May. Likely. There is the possibility that it could be part of a rumored group performance with Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez. Following last week’s Lover Secret Sessions in London with a group of fans, one alleged attendee tweeted that Swift’s new album includes a song with Gomez and Perry that is all about female empowerment. While the logistics check out (Swift and Gomez are longtime BFFs and Swift and Perry buried their feud with a side of fries in the video for “You Need To Calm Down”), we’re skeptical that any fan who was handpicked by Swift to attend one of her secret sessions would leak such juicy information. Swifties are ride or die. Or more like, NDA or die.
