It’s been a rough week for Kelly Ripa. Her Live! With Kelly and Michael co-host, Michael Strahan, announced on Wednesday that he was leaving the show for greener prospects over at Good Morning America. It probably wouldn’t have been as bad if she was given any kind of notice, but she found out right before the network announced the news. A total blindside, and it’s understandable if she wanted to get the hell out of town, which is what People is reporting.
According to the mag, she and husband Mark Consuelos had ‘always’ intended on going on vacation, and would be taking the Friday and Monday off. But what about Wednesday, when Strahan told viewers he was leaving, or today, for that matter, when she was MIA once again? Is she even in Turks and Caicos, as per People‘s report?
Page Six reports that Kelly was seen outside her apartment this morning, so maybe People got it wrong and she was simply on a staycation, which is still totally valid. Or maybe she is simply hurt and doesn’t want to go to a workplace that clearly doesn’t respect her.

Whatever the case, Kelly is off and reportedly not returning to the show until Strahan is off the set, according to ET Online. But we’re not sure Michael’s in the wrong here. Yes, he was her co-host for four years and there should be some loyalty there, but sources say that while he wanted to break the news to Kelly months ago (because that’s how long these discussions have been happening), ABC execs told him not to. It’s like Pine Valley all over again!
While some think Ripa is being completely unprofessional by bolting, she’s being treated horribly and she reacted in a basic human way. It’s the entertainment business, so maybe she could put on a fake, cheery face and pretend everything’s fine but, at the same time, why should she? It’s the execs who are completely unprofessional here, not Kelly. No one should be made to feel the way the network has made her feel. She’s put in so much time, and learning that she was losing her co-host (and maybe even her show, so there’s that additional drama) a few hours before the rest of the world was finding out is just a low blow.
This is only the beginning, but if they don’t cancel the show and extend GMA that much more, we have a suggestion on a replacement for Strahan, if he’s willing: Anderson Cooper. Right?! You’re welcome Kelly, and you’re welcome, ABC.
