Remember how Fendi planned to show an all-fur collection at Paris Fashion Week? Well, the brand’s affinity for animals goes much further. Kendall Jenner has continued her dominance as a fashion model, and is now posing in a campaign for the fur-friendly design house. With a penguin.

Why there is an oversized penguin in this ad is not clear. Is this a marriage equality message? Are we to infer that penguins are the next great equality frontier? Or is the fact that the two are dressed similarly a nod to Korean partner dressing?

Who knows?

But, there is the possibility that Karl Lagerfeld, the designer for the brand, was deeply inspired by the film Billy Madison. Or perhaps, more subtly, the inclusion of a penguin is a reference to the collection’s possible 2005 inspiration.

But the thing is, the penguin looks like a toy. It makes no allusions to Pingu, or Sanrio’s Badtz-Maru and Tuxedo Sam. In fact, it looks more like a drinking bird. Hm.

Y’know just thinking about it, a bird is British slang for “young woman.” And Kendall Jenner is 19, which puts her into the “bird” category.

So, maybe, the penguin is the mirror image of Kendall, because they are both fabulous young birds. Or maybe this is just a fashion ad, with an idea that was generated by people sitting in a room who thought, “you know what would be great, a large penguin.”
