It turns out working on a Michael Bay thriller doesn’t go without a fair share of injuries. At least not if you’re KJ Apa. The Riverdale star is currently shooting the pandemic thriller Songbird with the famed director, and for one reason or another it seems like he just keeps on hurting himself. The 23-year-old took to Instagram on July 29 to share a photo of a medic working on his bloody scalp after he supposedly injured it doing a stunt for the film. “Stunts..” Apa simply captioned the photo, which was accompanied by a second photo of him proudly displaying a bloody yellow t-shirt. As one does when they’ve suffered a gross injury and lived to tell about it.

Fans got even more of the story on July 30 when Apa explained the gory details on his Instagram Story. “I split my head open yesterday,” he revealed in a video post in which he is also completely distracted by the filter he chose. “I don’t know if you guys can see that, but I have two stitches in there—metal stitches.” Eventually Apa turns the filter off and offers a few extra closeups of the two prominent stitches. So what kind of stunt was he actually doing that warranted such a gash in his head? The New Zealander didn’t say. But this isn’t the first time he’s had a notable injury this month. It was just a couple of weeks ago, on July 19, that he was also on Instagram revealing that he’d gotten a metal shard stuck in his eye. In a nearly 2.5 minute, profanity-laced video that he shared with fans, viewers can see celebrity hairstylist Jason Schneidman trying to fish the shard out of Apa’s eyeball with a Q-tip.

“Bro, it’s stuck in there, bro. It’s really stuck," Apa says, looking at his eye in the mirror. "I have to work tomorrow.” Eventually Apa takes over himself and gets the shard out, and then proceeds to break down in tears. It’s never explained why, but many fans assumed it was a combination of the long hours that typically go into making a movie, coupled with the fact that Apa could have done some serious eye damage had the piece not come out. It’s also unclear if the shard got stuck during filming, or while Apa was doing something else… hey, he could have been welding? Yeah… work seems like a safe assumption.According to The Hollywood Reporter, Songbird is set two years in the future. The L.A.-shot project has been largely allowed to film because of the subject matter itself: the story revolves around the pandemic in a futuristic world where there still is no vaccination. That means lockdown and protective gear are naturally a part of the story. The film originally kicked off production in early July before being hit with a “Do Not Work” notice by SAG-AFTRA, but that order was quickly rescinded and production resumed. Demi Moore, Craig Robinson and Peter Stormare also star."We worked out the safety issues months ago, and we resolved [the latest issue with the unions] over the weekend," Bay told the publication. "I don't even think it was a safety issue. It was a money thing [and actor compensation]. But we are literally going to be the first film shooting in L.A. And we have a kind of special sauce with how we're doing it where there's zero contact."Well-compensated or not, for Archie Andrews fans everywhere and for Apa himself, here’s hoping that’s all the accidents that will be going down in the actor’s future… or at least for the next few months.[video_embed id='-1']BEFORE YOU GO: Pup gets geared up to go for motorcycle ride with his owner[/video_embed]
