It’s been less than two and a half years since Kylie Jenner first launched Kylie Lip Kits as a little side passion project to compliment her Keeping Up with the Kardashians fame. Little did we know that the humble side hustle would one day take Kylie from “the lesser-known little sis” to THE YOUNGEST EVER SELF-MADE BILLIONAIRE.
Last summer, Kylie earned the #27 on Forbes’ list of “America’s Richest Self-Made Women” with an estimated net worth of $900,000,000. Shortly after that, Womens Wear Daily reported that Kylie Cosmetics (née Kylie Lip Kits) had made $420 million in sales in just the 18 months it had been operating and predicted Kylie was on track to becoming the youngest self-made billionaire ever. Now, it’s officially happened and at the tender age of 21, Kylie Jenner has beat out Mark Zuckerberg by a solid two months.
Like it did after the last Forbes piece, the internet is once again gawking at the use of the word “self-made” to describe Kylie and her business. You see, some people find it a little generous to call a young woman who came from a family of millionaires, equipped with a locked-n-loaded PR machine and cosmetic R&D resources, “self-made.”
Kylie even caught some shade from the dictionary (again).

To be clear, she's obviously done very well for herself and put the work in, but that label feels disingenuous— Mike Schwag (@PocketsForSnack) March 5, 2019
Not saying she did anything wrong. She took advantage of her opportunities. But dont act like her mom and her dad's name didn't get her in doors. Again born on 3rd base and claiming a homerun. Just say she is a young billionaire. Leave it there.— Tim Wade (@TimWade77) March 5, 2019
Agree. Self made to me implies came from nothing. She capitalized on preexisting fame due to being part of a wealthy socialite famous family. That fame catapulted her success. It's like saying Prince William is self made.— lindi ortega (@lindiortega) March 5, 2019
Surprisingly, people were pretty fair with their judgement, pointing out that Kylie certainly put in work and was strategic about using her family’s fame and resources to build a super-successful business. After all, how cool is it that a woman came up and surpassed a man for the title of "youngest self-made billionaire" during Women’s History Month and less than a week before International Women's Day? Credit where credit is due!
Keep doing you, Kylie.
