It’s December, and that means Awards Season is about to hit us in full swing. We’re talking Golden Globes, Oscars and more red carpets than Ben Mulroney knows what to do with. But first, kicking it all off on the same morning that the 2017 Golden Globe nominees were announced, are the winners of the second annual amalgamated Critics Choice Awards.
The show, which combines the best of TV and film according to the Broadcast Critics Association, celebrated in a big way Sunday night. Among the more notable winners was La La Land, the whimsical musical that reunites Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone on the big screen. Add in a Golden Globe nomination and we’re pretty sure we’re going to be hearing a lot more about La La Land come February when the Oscars air.
So what other films are we keeping an eye on come February? Well according to these critics, we should definitely watch Natalie Portman’s turn as Jackie Kennedy in Jackie and Casey Affleck’s portrayal of Lee Chandler in Manchester by the Sea. Both actors picked up trophies for those movies, while the entire cast of Moonlight won for Best Ensemble. Naturally, our favourite movie featuring animated animals, Zootopia, took home some hardware for Best Animated Feature. Like there was ever any question.
On the TV side of things, HBO Canada’s Silicon Valley finally got some recognition for the hidden gem that it is, Donald Glover was awarded for his new series Atlanta, and Game of Thrones obviously won Best Drama. Because… well, Game of Thrones. Last but not least, Kate McKinnon followed up her Emmy win for SNL with another win on Sunday night, proving that she’s pretty much the best.
Sounds like a pretty jam-packed night to us, a.k.a. the perfect precursor to all the awards craziness ahead. For the full list of winners, head on over to the organization’s official site. Now excuse us while we go get our La La Land on.
