For the most luxurious of documents, in the most discerning of leather-bound portfolios, only the finest paper clip will do. Enter, the Prada Paper Clip, which, up until a few hours ago, was available for $185 US on Barneys.com. It’s sterling silver, about 6 cm long and looks rather like… a paper clip…except it’s got Prada embossed on one side, so you know it’s for holding really fancy papers, like $1,000 bills.
So, it’s actually a money clip meant for holding cash, but the Internet didn’t care. It saw a $185 paper clip. And It was not pleased.
$185 for a paper clip? This thing better be able to hold my life together.. pic.twitter.com/IunW9Aiy25

Prada sells a paper clip for 185 USD supposedly for holding your money. Shame that after puchasing it I wouldn’t have any#PradaPaperclip

Since the people of Twitter and elsewhere sunk their digital fangs into the outrageously priced office supply basic, the item seems to have disappeared from Barneys.com.
Did they sell out? Maybe. There’s been a lot of press, and some people were definitely interested. Because, in fairness, $185 on a paper clip seems like madness, but $185 on a wallet or other money-holding device doesn’t seem quite so ludicrous. Not quite.
Not only is Prada selling a $185 paper clip. I will be buying a $185 paper clip pic.twitter.com/S4btj450PN

But wouldn’t Barneys have just said that it had sold out on the site? Perhaps word came down from Prada to pull the precious paper organizers from the store. Considering the fact that Barneys still has not one but two other $150 paper-clip-shaped money clips (also sterling silver, also a little over 6 cm long), we’re thinking it wasn’t them.
