Melania Trump is a stunning woman, there’s no doubt about that. So we couldn’t wait to see her first official portrait as First Lady. Clearly, our wish is the White House’s command; the portrait was unveiled and OH. EM. GEE., it is something else.
Perhaps it’s because she’s used to being photographed — not just as President Donald Trump‘s wife but as a former model — but there’s something… off, something very… un-FLOTUS-like about it.
On one hand, her embellished pussy-bow blouse under a black blazer is the stuff Dynasty cast photos are made from. On the other, she looks all business, with her crossed arms and half-smirk that doesn’t quite reach her eyes. A portrait this important should be tasteful, not trendy, and stand the test of time. She shouldn’t look like she’s a judge on a reality competition, or a contestant on her husband’s former show.
But what might be the most striking thing about this is Melania proudly showing off her 15-carat ring of gaudiness. It’s likely the first thing all the lower- and middle-class Trump voters are seeing since they believe (believed?) he understood the working class. Melania, just because you’ve got it doesn’t mean you have to flaunt it.
Is this how the president wanted her to look, or is this all Melania? Because there had to be other options, no? More welcoming and relaxed-looking, less Photoshop and smoky, hazy filters and this could’ve been amazing.
