This is not how we wanted to end the month of September. Following the shocking split of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, Liev Schreiber and Naomi Watts have announced they are separating after 11 years together. But unlike the couple formerly known as Brangelina, Liev and Naomi released a joint statement.

“Over the past few months we’ve come to the conclusion that the best way forward for us as a family is to separate as a couple. It is with great love, respect, and friendship in our hearts that we look forward to raising our children together and exploring this new phase of our relationship,” the couple said. “While we appreciate your curiosity and support, we ask the press to be mindful of our children and respect their right to privacy.”

The couple, who have been together since 2005 but never married, have two sons together, Samuel, 7, and Sasha, 9, who was Liev’s dapper date for the Emmys.

Why, Liev and Naomi? WHY? Well, apparently they’ve “been on the rocks for quite a while,” at least that’s what a source told People. But their pics from TIFF and the Venice Film Festival a few weeks ago suggest otherwise.

The two may have broken up but it’s clear they definitely still respect each other, enough to still hang out (at least on a professional basis, as they made the rounds promoting their film, The Bleeder). Yes, they’re both talented, exceptional actors but photos of the two of them show that they’re still relaxed and comfortable and even happy in each other’s company. Alas, it’s safe to assume that they tried to work things out and it’s come to this. Yep, we’re sad. But we’ll take a nice breakup any day over what’s happening with certain other exes.
