It’s a sad day in Riverdale. Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse, who met while playing on-screen couple Betty Cooper and Jughead Jones, have reportedly split after two years of dating. The pair’s breakup was first reported by US Weekly, who had multiple sources confirming the news of the split.
Reinhart, who co-stars in the upcoming Hustlers movie, and Sprouse, who first rose to fame playing David Schwimmer’s son on Friends and later starred in The Suite Life of Zack and Cody with his twin brother Dylan, were both in attendance at this past weekend’s Comic-Con in San Diego and appeared friendly at the Riverdale events, even sitting next to one another during the show’s panel discussion. But the couple reportedly kept their distance off-camera, with US Weekly reporting that Sprouse was overheard speaking to a friend at a party for EW, with the former child star confirming that he and Reinhart had split.
This past weekend’s TV, movies, and comics fan festival was a sadly fitting place for news of the pair’s split to hit the headlines, with Reinhart and Sprouse first spotted kissing at Comic-Con in 2017. The on-screen couple, known affectionately as Bughead, didn’t confirm their relationship for a year, instead posting pictures of one another on social media and often spotted on vacation together by paparazzi. It wasn’t until the 2018 Met Gala that Reinhart and Sprouse made their official debut as a couple and they stepped out together again to this year’s party.

But according to E! News, the couple have been apart for a few weeks. “Lili and Cole broke-up earlier this summer. The two are not living together this season.”
The source told E! that the former couple are “intentionally keeping their distance from the other,” but now that Riverdale has started production on Season 4, the pair are once again spending time together on set and are on “much better terms.” According to the same insider, there is still hope for reconciliation, so Bughead fans shouldn’t lose faith just yet. “Right now, it’s unclear where things stand, but it seems [like] they could be heading back in the direction of getting together.”
Reinhart and Sprouse will now have to endure the uncomfortable reality of being exes playing a couple on TV, with Betty and Jughead continuing their relationship on the series. The actors join a long list of real-life couples who have split up behind the scenes and continued to play romantic partners on their TV shows, including Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder on The Vampire Diaries, Joshua Jackson and Katie Holmes on Dawson’s Creek, Adam Brody and Rachel Bilson on The OC, Blake Lively and Penn Badgley on Gossip Girl, Kaley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki on The Big Bang Theory, and Sophia Bush and Chad Michael Murray on One Tree Hill. Coincidentally, Murray was a guest star on Season 3 of Riverdale, so maybe that connection means he can share his own experiences with, and offer advice to, the young actors.
