Lili Reinhart is branching away from solving crime in Riverdale and scamming men in Hustlers to release her first collection of original poems, Swimming Lessons. The book will feature bite-sized prose and illustrations that touch on themes of fame, young love, heartbreak, depression, and anxiety, according to The Cut. The actress took to Instagram on Tuesday to break the news.“Strangers, songs, films, fictional characters, love in various forms, and of course my own experiences were my inspiration throughout the creation of Swimming Lessons,” penned Reinhart. “This book means a lot to me and I’m very grateful to be in the position to finally share it."
Though Swimming Lessons will be Reinhart’s first book, fans of the Riverdale star (and her A+ social media accounts) may know that the actress has been writing poetry and sharing it online for quite some time. Take this “sappy nighttime birthday poem” (her title, not ours) that she wrote for boyfriend Jughead Cole Sprouse’s birthday.
Aside from Instagram, Reinhart has also previously shared her work on tumblr, including a touching poem in honour of her Riverdale co-star, Luke Perry, in March 2019.“It's strange to see the world move on. When someone you love, gets taken away from you. And the small circumference surrounding you is stuck,” she shared on her tumblr page. According to the Swimming Lessons pre-order site, we can expect another touching Luke Perry tribute to appear in Reinhart’s upcoming book.Given that the actress also mentioned her book was inspired by her own "life experiences," "fictional characters" and “love in various forms,” is it safe to assume we'll get another heart-soaring Cole Sprouse poem, or Riverdale shout-out? Or better yet, maybe Cole will provide the illustrations? He's definitely no stranger to art & photography. We'd also be totally down for a Hustlers mention -- we're pretty sure those scenes with JLo, Keke Palmer and Constance Wu provided more than enough material to fill a book. For now, however, we can only dream. Swimming Lessons hits shelves on May 5, 2020.
