There’s a lot more to designing a room than just painting it and filling it with furniture. Isn’t it frustrating when you’ve picked out the perfectly colour-coordinated couch, chairs and end tables; decided where you want everything to go; selected the perfect wall art, but something still seems to be missing? The gorgeously designed rooms in magazines and every Property Brothers show seem to have a certain je ne sais quoi that’s impossible to replicate in real life. The sophistication. The luxury. Where does it come from?

Sometimes your room is just missing one simple item to bring it from cute to magazine-worthy. Consider adding some of these items to take any house-guest’s breath away.

Coffee table books

A talking piece like no other. Coffee table books make you look smart and cultured and act as art in their own right. Buy something related to a personal interest. Photography is always a safe bet, but books on history, art, film and fashion are also eye-catching. Check out Amazon’s top-rated coffee table books for inspiration.

Metallics and mirrors

Rose gold is really trendy right now but gold and silver are classics that accent a room perfectly. Definitely use metallics, but use them in moderation. Metallic plant pots or edging on tables, picture frames and trays are good ways to work it in without looking tacky.

Mirrors are always a good idea too because they perform the triple functions of being art, making the room look bigger and, well, being a mirror.

@ashtonklompinteriors you give us chills 😍

Art that matches the colour scheme

Don’t wait to pick out art for your space until after the room is all put together. If you want your art to look like it really belongs there, start by choosing your piece and then pick your colour scheme for the room based on colours present in the art. That way, the art draws the entire room together.

Wallpaper book shelves

Add depth and texture to a room by wallpapering behind shelving. You can enhance even a simple IKEA bookshelf by papering the backboard with something that goes with the room.

Layered texture

When you’re designing your room, something that really brings everything together and look professional is layering of different textures. It’s easy to get a few matching pillows and blankets, but coordinating different textures and sizes will really give your room an edge. Try looking at faux fur or large cable knit instead of just simple fabrics.

Natural textures

While we’re layering textures, something that gives the room a sense of maturity is using natural ones. Large wood grains, stone, plants, fur and even snake skin are great natural textures to add.

bold overhead light

Don’t be afraid of choosing a statement chandelier. If you have the ceiling for it (i.e. this isn’t a basement) go for something big and fancy. It’s like hanging luminous art from the ceiling. We guarantee that anyone who walks in the room will immediately be drawn to it.

an accent wall

Accent walls–whether they be wallpaper or just a different colour–add dimension and bonus colour to any space. They’re also still novel enough that they make a bold statement.
