It’s that time of year again: Pantone, the authority on all things colour, has announced the It hue for 2019. Drum roll, please…. Meet Living Coral, a vibrant orange-ish pink that has the power to mentally transport you to an epic sunset happening on some tropical beach; likely, you’ve got a blended drink in hand, too. It’s bright, it’s energetic and yet there’s something soothing about it.
The annual colour announcement, now in its 19th year, was unveiled at Art Basel Miami this week.

Introducing the Pantone Color of the Year 2019, PANTONE 16-1546 Living Coral – an animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge. Sociable and spirited, the engaging nature of Living Coral welcomes and encourages lighthearted activity. Symbolizing our innate need for optimism and joyful pursuits, Living Coral embodies our desire for playful expression. #COY2019
But the colour isn’t just reminiscent of vacay vibes. It has a deeper meaning, too, one that’s timely given the state of our environment. It’s a subtle nudge about the growing concerns around global warming, and that the world’s coral reefs are just one of the many natural resources disappearing at an alarming rate. Thanks for keeping our depleting coral top of mind, Pantone.
“We get energy from nature,” Pantone says. “Just as coral reefs are a source of sustenance and shelter to sea life, vibrant yet mellow Living Coral embraces us with warmth and nourishment to provide comfort and buoyancy in our continually shifting environment.”
