The MTV VMAs are always a headline-grabbing romp, but this year was easily one for the books. You see, there are performances we expected—Shawmila teasing us with “Señorita,” Taylor doing Taylor—and then there was Lizzo. Our queen, always doing the most, rocked out in a corset-trench alongside a squad of dancers against the backdrop of a huge blow-up booty.

It sounds like we’re describing a fever dream, but it was all totally real. The girl brought the house down with her performance and it was, if we may say, “good as hell.” It’s Lizzo’s world and we’re just living in it, because we’re pretty sure that performance paid our bills, cleared our skin, got a head start on our taxes, all while giving us the self-esteem pep rally we’re still not sure we deserved.

Of course, she wasn’t the only one that had us grooving hard. The VMAs, hosted this year by comedian Sebastian Maniscalco, went live Monday night in New Jersey, featuring performances from Taylor Swift, the Jonas Brothers, Queen Latifah, Lil Nas X and so. many. more. Of course, the show featured more than a few stand-out moments, so ICYMI, here are some of the buzziest tidbits from the 2019 VMAs. Hold on tight, because it’s a wild ride.

Normani makes a run for Beyoncé 2.0

Normani has taken the world by storm with her single “Motivation,” and her performance at the VMAs had Twitter fangirling hard. The Fifth Harmony alum didn’t come to play, and after last night, we’re pretty sure beside the definition of “fire” in the dictionary is just a clip of this performance. Complete with a basketball court set and an insane dance solo, Normani killed the VMAs with so much sass, fans are even comparing her to Beyoncé.

Taylor performed “Lover” for the first time and we’re still feeling all the feels

Taylor Swift opened the show and surprised us all by following up her nominated song “You Need to Calm Down” with a sweet performance of “Lover,” AKA her ode to Joe Alwyn, her boyfriend of three years. “Lover” is a serious fan favourite off the album, and for good reason—it’s sweet, nostalgic and gives us major OG Taylor vibes. Remember “Teardrops of my guitar” or “Love Story”? “Lover” hits those same notes, and the performance was nothing short of mesmerizing. The song is literally the embodiment of the happy ever after we all want. *Dabs eyes*

Taylor  went on to take home the awards for Best Video for Good and Video of the Year.

Miley Cyrus had this year’s most emotional performance

We don’t know about you, but we’re still lowkey reeling from Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth’s very public split. The two have been on again/off again for nearly a decade, and while their divorce marks the end of an era, it’s time we follow Miley’s lead and “move on.” This year at the VMAs, Miley let her vocals do the talking as she performed “Slide Away,” her powerful breakup anthem. The ballad was raw and emotional, punctuated by the black and white screen and stripped down set. The girl delivered.

Shawmila gave us (and Joe Jonas) a heart attack with that near-kiss

And truth be told, we still haven’t fully recovered. Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello brought the heat, the sizzle, the chemistry during their “Señorita” duet, ending with an almost-kiss that sent us spiraling. If you didn’t ship them before, we’d put money on the fact that you ship them now. Heck, even Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner were desperately waiting for that kiss… according to Joe, they still are. Relatable.

Then when Shawn and Camila won the VMA for Best Collaboration, they accepted the award hand-in-hand, and the PDA didn’t stop when they left the stage. Steamiest duo of the VMAs? Hands down.

Missy Elliott reunited with Alyson Stoner

Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award recipient, Missy Elliott, “worked it” at the VMAs this year with an epic performance featuring a familiar face. Performing a medley of her greatest hits (because she’s Missy Elliott), the star reunited with dancer Alyson Stoner in a legendary blast from the past. Seventeen years ago, Elliott’s iconic “Work It” video won Video of the Year, which featured Stoner as a little girl. She had the moves back then, and she DEFINITELY still has the moves now. Twitter went wild for this girl’s dance solo and honestly, we’re still re-hydrating after the hype.

John Travolta continues his legacy of awards show flubs

And rounding out our buzziest moments, is John Travolta’s inevitable awards show fumble. While presenting the award for Video of the Year—and AFTER making an “Adele Dazeem” joke with Queen Latifah—Travolta confused Taylor Swift with a drag queen. Yup. When “You Need to Calm Down” was announced as the winner, many of the drag queens who appear in the video made it to the stage before Taylor, which led to the Grease star trying to hand off the Moon Man trophy to former RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant Jade Jolie. Talk about awkward.
