Lizzo has been one of the most exciting artists to emerge in the pop and R&B scene in the past few years and with the release of her third studio album Cuz I Love You in April, the singer and rapper has cemented her position as one of the best artists of 2019. During her performance at Monday night’s MTV Movie & TV Awards, Lizzo’s world domination continued.
Taking the stage to perform her massive single “Juice,” Lizzo paid homage to the 1993 movie Sister Act 2—you know, the one with Lauryn Hill. Stepping into her character Rita, Lizzo and her backup dancers recreated the film’s climatic performance of “The Hymn of Joy” at the state-wide choir championship, with a stage manager even telling the group “Take off your robes,” before joining Lizzo on stage for a crazy-energetic performance.
Calling it her favourite movie, Lizzo wore a denim crop top and matching denim pants with side cut-outs, keeping her impressive vocals in-check while dancing her way through the self-empowerment anthem. Switching roles at one point from Hill’s Rita to Whoopi Goldberg’s Sister Mary Clarence/Deloris van Cartier, Lizzo directed her choir of singers and dancers with her back to the crowd, showing off the bedazzled pants that displayed her name. As if we were going to forget Lizzo.
Panning shots of the A-list crowd showed the celebs enjoying Lizzo’s debut award show performance, with the cast of Sabrina The Teenage Witch out of their seats dancing. Melissa McCarthy, Elisabeth Moss and Tiffany Haddish, who star in the upcoming mobster film The Kitchen, introduced Lizzo’s performance, with Haddish calling her the “best singer, rapper, singer/flautist in the game.” The trio danced and smiled along to the feel-good song in their seats near the front of the stage and Jada Pinkett Smith, that’s trailblazer to you, and son Jaden also bopped their heads to the bop.
Lizzo owned the MTV Movie & TV awards even before she hit the stage, appearing in a body-hugging green dress on the red carpet and having fun with the dress’s green screen tint, quickly making herself into a meme.
Incredibly, Monday’s performance marked Lizzo’s first on a major award show, but the singer has been steadily racking up TV credits, with performances The Today Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live! and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Best singer, rapper, single/flautist in the game for real.
